Student Code of Conduct

Student Code of Conduct

Aviara Oaks Elementary believes that in order for students to develop and maintain a positive self-image and behave in a productive manner, it is necessary to have a discipline policy which emphasizes the positive, recognizes and rewards responsible actions, and stresses student decision-making. We believe that good behavior will, in turn, lead to improved learning and academic success for all students.

Students are actively encouraged to learn and develop responsibility for their own behavior. The consequences are a direct reflection of the choices made. Positive choices will result in the following:

Classroom incentives/programs/activities will be determined by the students and teachers in each class to recognize students' academic achievement and social success.

Student Recognition Assemblies will recognize outstanding students for modeling and being outstanding exemplars of our monthly character trait.

Caught Being Good Tickets will be presented to students for positive behavior on schoolwide basis. This currency may then be redeemed for a variety of student store items each Friday at morning recess.

A student who chooses to disregard the standards outlined will generally receive the following behavioral consequences:

          First Offense

Warning; Formal notification to the student will be made by the teacher explaining the behavior problem and the correction needed to succeed in the classroom.

          Second Offense

Teacher conference/ time out / loss of recess; This will be a one-on-one conference outlining the behavior improvement and plan for success.

          Third Offense

Parent call home and time out; The teacher will make phone contact with the parents to inform them of the situation and solicit their support in correcting the behavior.

          Fourth Offense

Subject to teacher discretion; this may result in any or all of the above or office referral which may include loss of privileges or activities

          Fifth Offense

Office Referral; this may result in any or all of the above including removal from classroom program and/or activities and suspension

Some situations may result in immediate office referrals. Starting a fight, defiance of authority, or disrespect of classroom teacher or instruction will result in administrative action and/ or home  suspension.

NO WEAPONS POLICY: The Carlsbad Unified School District has established a “zero tolerance” policy regarding the possession of any dangerous object- i.e. gun, knife, or object used in the manner of such weapons- on school property, unlawful sale of a controlled substance, robbery or extortion, and causing serious injury to another person, and sexual assault. Any one of these offenses will result in an expulsion recommendation.

Discipline is designed to guarantee the safety and well-being of the total school community. Emphasis is placed on student self-responsibility, self-respect, positive learning attitudes, and school pride. Sexual harrassment and/or intimidation of any kind- verbal or physical- will not be tolerated and may result in consequences such as suspension. Habitual patterns of inappropriate behavior will require parent involvement to resolve.

As a staff, we are doing everything possible to improve your child's academic and behavioral achievement. You are the most important person in your child's life, so it is in the best interest of your child that we work together regarding student discipline.
